Q: Is this a decent engine for a new car?
So I’m looking at buying a 2011 Dodge avenger mainstreet to replace my current car. My only concern is the engine. The model that I’m looking at has a 2.4-Liter I4 DOHC 16-Valve Dual VVT Engine. I’m not really knowledgeable on car engines, so if anyone could tell me if its a decent engine, that would be awesome.

I’m going to be using it for basic transportation to and from work, etc… and I just want to know if it will hold up.

This is my first accident. I JUST bought a 2010 Dodge Avenger 4/16/2011. I got into a pretty serious car accident yesterday 4/21. It’s my car but I wasnt driving at the time of the accident. My friend ran a stop sign and the other car saw us coming but failed to stop, she instead accelerated. Anway, she did some serious damage to my car. 1 of my doors is dented in, my back bumper is gone, and theres some damage to the front of the car. I have insurance. She doesnt. I’m terrified of how much this is all going to cost at the end & how much time it’s going to take to get this all fixed. My questions are, whats going to happen next? to my car? whats my insurance going to do since I wasnt driving? whats my dealership going to do to my car? & how is this going to affect my payments? OH, & what about the drivers car? HELP! i’m 18 by the way!
I have full coverage on my car. I know I should be asking my insurance these questions, I just need to hear advice from someone that has been thru this before.

A: First of all, relax a bit. Most people have many accidents in their driving career. I’ve had six or seven myself. Second of all, you must be completely honest in your dealings with your insurance company and the police. I doubt you can convince your insurance company that someone who is illegally driving without insurance would speed up and try to ram your car on purpose. Think about it…..Contact your insurance company. Different states have different rules regarding how insurance works. In my state, Missouri, the insurance follows the person, not the vehicle. Does your friend also have insurance? His may pay for your vehicle’s repairs. I hope you got a police report at the time of the accident, but it sounds like you did not. This helps a lot with the insurance process although not always in your favor. In the future when you have an accident, and you probably will, get police report, take some photos with your phone of both vehicles, contact your insurance agent while you are standing there (hopefully unharmed), get any insurance and identity insurance from the other party involved and above all remain calm. Most of your questions will be answered best by contacting your insurance agent. The dealership does not care about what happened to your car nor will it affect your payments. When you bought it it became your problem, not theirs. The other car involved will have to pay for their own damages and your insurance company will probably go after them for damages to your vehicle. As far as your insurance payments go, they may go up, they may not. Your friend broke the law by rolling through a stop sign, not you. Your car will need to have an estimate, usually at least two, to let the insurance company know how much it will cost to fix it. You will take it to a location that your insurance company will give you and let them look it over. My guess given your description is around four thousand dollars of damage, give or take (personal experience). After the insurance company approves this amount you will have your car fixed in about a week or two and off you go again will a little more discretion about who drives your car…..Your insurance company will also give you and your friend a phone call and get your side of the story for the record. Sound like a lot, but it isn’t that bad, especially after you have had your first few accidents! Good luck!

Q: Which car to go to prom in?
Prom’s on May 15, 2011. I live in Philly and I really want to rent a car just for me (yes, unfortunately no one wants to live up to the honor of spending time and arriving to prom looking gorgeous with me). But that’s besides the point. My point is my mom’s tight in money at the moment and I know renting a car is quite the price tag.

So how much would it cost her to rent a car like just to drop me off TO prom, with no picking up after prom? Say like renting it just for one person for 3 or 4 hours JUST TO DROP ME OFF.

I swear I am not looking forward to my mom dropping me off in a 2008 Dodge Avenger. Not an ugly car, but is that an embarrassing car to arrive to prom in? Please let me know.

A: My parents got a durango that was fully loaded. It was fine when we were younger but we really don’t like it now. How long do you plan on having the car? I would say to get the grand caravan or nitro. Because our family had a ton of problems with the durango. We got it as a family vehicle (there are 4 kids in our family) and we got it for trips like to see family. And we barely ever used it. We bought it brand new and it made noises, has engine problems, and overall its a piece of crap.

Invest in the dvd player with 4 pairs of headphones (even though you only have one child right now-and pregnant with the second- and may not need 4pairs for a while.) It will keep your kids entertained. Avoid fighting once they are older and its a great way to keep the kids happy

A: You might as well put a sign on the back of the car so your friends can see. “MY PARENTS BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR ME” If you have a big car like this, guess how is going to be driving the crowds? Q: my auto insurance company is telling me they may not pay claim what can i do?
okay here is all the info im trying to figure out my best avenues to handle my situation. i live in illinois. my 2007 chrysler 300 touring has been stolen. it has an immobilizer. on the 17th of january 2011 my wife tried to move the car and could not get it out of the snow and ice. she called and said she needed my help. but i was not due to be back off base til the 19th when i did get back we noticed the car was gone i had told her to wait until we file a report because i called around and wanted to see if it has been towed, but i called my insurance company that day to give them a heads up. the next day jan. 20th after finding no tow lot had it i made the police report. the car was found about a day or two after. i go to the pound to see my car. it looks as if it has been driven because the drivers side front end, and doors are smashed. all the windows are smashed including rear and windshield.. radio was taken, ignition was pushed and broken from its place but key hole was not punched in. now my insurance co says the will deny our claim if there is no forced entry meaning steering and ignition has to be tampered with. they say a third party co will investigate that. i don’t mind the investigation. what can i do if it is denied? don’t they know there are many other ways to steal a car other than tampering with the steering or ignition. also this is the second time in 7 months that this car has been stolen. insurance co also asked why she waited days to go back and check on the car im a Marine an usually im on base and don’t get back home till the weekend my wife was in poland for a month for about a week before this happened. so the car stays stationary often. she went to an agent to sign up for the coverage. and received a piece of paper stating whats covered.

A: For the same car to be stolen twice in 7 months really puts out big “red flags”. Most people in their lifetime never ever has a car stolen, but this same car in such a short period is unbelievable.

I commend you for having full coverage on your car but sometimes that also puts out red flags since many people who have had a lot of claims will do this to make sure they have all their bases covered.

Expect to complete numerous forms and recorded statements from this insurance company. They will be looking for anything that does not make sense or if you lie anywhere. Does this car have a loan on it? Are you current on the payments? If not, another red flag since in many fraud cases if behind on payments, many cars get stolen. What about other bills, are you behind on those?

The odds are they will most likely pay unless they can outright prove that there is fraud involved. If there is a question, they will usually favor for the policyholder since you have a contract with them. But this will be a long drawn out process before they make a final decision.

But;;;;;;;;when your policy comes up for renewal, expect that they will not be renewing you, or your rates will skyrocket with 2 theft claims. Even if you change insurance companies, many may decide you are a bad risk and may force you to take out high risk insurance and also pay the huge costs for that insurance.

Q: Chevy HHR vs Chrysler 200?
I’m more or less looking for an outside opinion. I have two cars options. Both brand new 2011 models.

The HHR LS is being offered for $16,999. It’s pretty standard, with no extra bells or whistles. The dealer is offering us $3000 for our trade-in. This line is also being retired.

The 200 Touring is $22,590 and $4000 for trade-in and $1500 in incentives. It has an advanced touchscreen media center, 30 GB on-board hard drive, and some other goodies. It’s a completely new line (used to be the Sebring)

They both get about the same mileage, both are 4-cylinder, both would be paid in full. Also, the 200 has about a $300 gain on the HHR for projected resale value.

Now, do I go with the affordable choice or the luxury choice? What other things should I consider? This is daunting.

A: Negotiate $4,000 for your trade at the Chevy dealer and get the HHR. Heck, it it’s paid off and you have the title, sell it yourself. You should have no issues selling it for what a dealer offered as a trade-in value.

If you can deal with the drive and the blind spots, the HHR is a better vehicle, has proven reliability and is much less expensive. Forget projected resale value. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s a guess. The fact is that Domestic models have high depreciation and both of these vehicles will depreciate quickly.

The Sebring was a garbage vehicle and I am automatically suspect of anything replacing it.

A: Yes you can, I would recommend 195/50 R15. And don’t listen to the other guy, Nissan offer superb cars and I’m sure that the Nissan Cube will follow this same pattern, after all they were/are VERY successful in Japan.

A: That’s like giving up filet mignon so you can have hamburger. I think you’ll miss the power as well as the cache from owning a luxury car. But, I agree, the Cubes are cute. But I think the first time you tried to merge onto the highway you’d regret it.

I mean, seriously, the air hitting it is hitting a flat surface! That’s gotta slow it down so much….

A: I have driven several and you know it is not bad. Freeway speed is much smoother that I thought. Windshield is still raked About as much as a 1970’s pick up truck. Areodynamic I know it is not Brick= 1 aero Cube = 3 the Cube makes people on the road smile. And when your sitting inside you don’t even notice how funky it looks. From the drivers seat that windshield is 4 feet away.

Consumer reports gives the 2009 Cube a ‘Well below average’ rating in overall reliability, which means that owners have reported significantly more problems with the Cube than owners of other, comparable vehicles.

The one saving grace of the Cube is that it is safe. It earned IIHS top honors in overall safety in the ’small cars’ segment.

You’ll be able to pick them up for a lot better deal elsewhere.

Be firm. If they don’t want to play ball, just tell them you will take your money elsewhere. Go to more than one dealership and see if you get different responses.

A: I have no issues with it is suits the style it is aimed at.

Top gear tested it and found faults but with any vehiclebut over all it seemes really great and is a very very popular seller in Japan.

I have seen them and think they look quite art deco. I have got an M3 to trade in, how much do you think I will have to stump up? And do you think I am making the right decision?

A: I wouldn’t go for it. Yes, it’s a work of [modern] art, but just because it looks good (to you) it doesn’t mean it’s a good car. It has a tiny engine, decent interior space (but less than Scion XB, even less than your M3, for that matter), and is horrible on the highways. It was meant for city driving, which is why there’s also an electric version.

Keep your BMW M3. If it’s less than 10 years old, then it’s worth more than a brand new Cube anyway. Months after buying the Cube, you’ll be kicking yourself for trading in the M3 on it, whereas the dealership will be happy as can be.

If you really want a new car for about the value of an older M3, consider these alternatives:

Justin, a cap is not going to add power to the electrical system, that would be a magical cap, and since we do not live in wonderland it does not exist. A cap will only stiffen the voltage to your audio system IF the alternator is already providing sufficient power.
Tiago, Kinetik batteries are good but way over priced. Odyssey batteries are the exact same batteries that have the Stinger name on it, they are made by the exact same company.

First you will want to do the big 3 upgrade to your car. I will suggest using 0/1 gauge wiring for this.
1. Battery negative post to chassis ground
2. Battery positive post to alternator
3. Engine block to chassis ground

Then upgrade your battery, even if you do not need it, a better battery will not hurt. I suggest Odessey batteries since they are the same exact batteries that Stinger offers and those are some of the best on the market.
If you are still have dimming lights, then you will have to get a H.O. alternator. There are many manufacturers out there and you can find them by googleing high output alternators. Then at this point if you want to add a condenser or a cap it will be useful.

A: My wife has had the 2.0 Turbo Genesis coupe now for about 9 months and she swears she has never driven a better sporty coupe. She absolutely loves it. Don’t kid yourself about the power either. The 2.0 Turbo can get you to 60 MPH in about 6.8 seconds, better than any other car out there in its price range and it will give you about 38 miles to the gallon with cruise control on at 55 MPH. It comes standard with Bluetooth, Ipod compatible sound system, Leather seats, 6 speed transmission, power everything etc. I dare you to find an equivalent car out there for the same value. If you want some more power go for the V6 motor, it will get you to 60 MPH in about 5.6 seconds….very quick indeed. The only cars that will get you there quicker are the Mustang V8 and the Camaro V8, and they are $ 10,000 more and don’t look as good.

A: Yes, I’d have to test drive both, but I know the path you walk my friend. I bought a 2000 Nissan Maxima SE back in July 1999 and replaced it with a 2006 Hyundai Azera Limited in January of 2007 with no regrets. I love my Azera, nicest driving and most luxurious car I’ve ever owned. The Genesis looks and sounds like it will be a great car, so a test drive of both is definitely called for. I’d go for the model with the cooled seats, definitely helps get through those hot summer days where your back is sweating while the front of you gets blasted by the AC. I think these are both excellent cars you’ll be happy and excited to own.

A: I would go with the CX-9, unless high service costs are not an issue for you in which case go for the Volvo. Volvo’s are extremely safe well engineered cars but as with most European cars do tend to cost more for regular service.

2. Chevy Traverse. Chevy quality is improving and offers a decent warranty. Good dealer network.
3. Nissan Armada. I haven’t heard too much about the Armada good or bad but going up against a Honda and Chevy, I’d pick this third. PRICE IS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE ($59,098!!! WTH!!)

A: That should be a electric fuel pump. Located under the drivers door inside the frame, unbolt and remove 2 nylon yoke clips to disconnect the fuel line and unplug electrical plug connections. You will need a small socket and rachet set plus a screw driver, watch out for gas draining when removing the fuel lines….

A: A simple and affordable way is to use Duplicolor Vinyl or Fabric coating. Did it to the seats in my Honda and it came out pretty nice.
It is just like spray painting essentially, remove what ever you want to coat, give it a very thorough cleaning and vacuuming, and spray until you get the depth of color you want.

I recently replaced my EGR valve in my ‘95 Ford Ranger and yet the check engine light still comes on. I unhooked the battery cables for 15 minutes which caused the light to go off, but it came back on after about an hour of driving. What else is there to do?

A: Once again I see you have gotten ripped off too.

I have NEVER—-EVER seen an E.G.R. go bad. I have had a hundred computers tell me it was bad when in fact it was not. Each time I have come across that it has ended up being clogged passages inside of the intake manifold. This causes erratic readings showing a bad E.G.R. I am not saying yours was not faulty but I would check there first, long before I would waste money on an E.G.R.

Q: Ford Ranger: How do I reset the computer for the check engine light?
I recently replaced my EGR valve in my ‘95 Ford Ranger and yet the check engine light still comes on. I unhooked the battery cables for 15 minutes which caused the light to go off, but it came back on after about an hour of driving. What else is there to do?

A: Well, since you’ve already installed the EGR valve you’ve puchased from Auto Zone, the option of returning the part for a refund is no longer viable. But, I would bet the farm your EGR valve WASN’T the problem. More likely it was the DPFE sensor that needed replaced, NOT the EGR valve. This sensor is either an aluminum bodied rectangular shaped sensor with two rubber hoses and a three wire electrical connector connected to it, or a black pastic sensor if it has already been replaced before. This is a VERY commonly failing part on ALL Ford products. You would need to purchase it from the Ford dealer parts department. Just ask for part number F77Z-9J460-AB at the counter to get the part you need. Hope this helps

Woundering why when I turn on my ac when I first start my truck it makes this clunking sound then after about 3 sec it stops it only does this once and awhile. Also Ive had this oil leak sence I bought the truck back in July 2006 they’ve replaced the oil pan 3 times and the oil pan gaskets. Each time they say they do a black light test and see no leaks after they fix it. But after a month or so it leaks again what can I do I keep takeing it to a Ford dealer but I only have a Power Train Warrenty. The first time I had to pay but the last 2 times I havent had to pay so thats good but I still have to take out time out of my day to go and sit there. Is there anything else it could be?

A: Are they using the dye and black light before they replace the oil pan? To verify that is where the leak is coming from? Oil leaks can be hard to find exactly where they are coming from, and I have a hard time believing that it is leaking from the same place if they keep fixing it. Did they tell you why it keeps leaking from the same place after they fix it? I mean, how do they explain to you that it’s the same place over and over, after they have fixed it?

It just doesn’t really make sense… At least you haven’t had to pay after the first time, but still, I would ask a little more about that.

It could be coming from many different places, they are sometimes really hard to find, especially when they all leak down to the same area. They might think it’s one thing, but the leak could actually be somewhere else. They should be cleaning the area, putting the dye in and checking it for leaks before the repair…

My car makes a noise when I first turn on the ac too, I was told that’s fine. But you could always ask next time you take it in.

When my lease expires in 2 years I’m going Tacoma, or, what I really want, a hybrid or natural gas truck (if one becomes available).

108k isn’t bad. I bought my ‘97 with 90k 4 years ago. I now have 192k on it. I replaced the alternator, a/c pump, fuel pump once. had an issue with the torque convertor lock-up solenoid ($100 worth of parts), fixed it in my driveway. Sounds like more of the light-duty trucks are having this issue, but many owners don’t realize it and cook the tranny. Of course the little things like plugs, cap/rotor, idler and pitman arm…

The 1st Gen Vortec motors are common for having fuel pump problems and intake manifold leaks. The fuel pump is simple, just replace the pump… The intake manifold in most cases leaks coolant down the front of the block to the ground. Some worse than others. Mine started leaking slightly at 130k. I’ve never fixed it, no worse than it really is. Some can suck coolant into the combustion chambers and HAVE to be fixed.

A: Here is the process as per GM. Remember that all your key fobs must be programmed at the same time since once you begin this process the truck erases all previous fobs.

1. Close all the vehicle doors.

2. Insert the ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder.

3. Press and hold the door unlock switch.

4. While holding the door lock switch in the unlock position, cycle the ignition ON, OFF, ON, OFF.

5. Release the door unlock switch. The doors will lock and unlock to confirm the program mode.

6. Press and hold the LOCK button and the UNLOCK button simultaneously on one transmitter. After a delay of approximately 15 seconds, the doors will lock and unlock to confirm the programming of that transmitter.

7. Repeat the previous step to program up to 4 transmitters.

8. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position in order to exit the keyless entry transmitter programming mode.

9. Operate the transmitter functions in order to verify correct system operation.

But yeah, between those the Tahoe is best. I’d get the 2011 JGC though because it looks even better. Plus since it’s s smaller SUV it’ll be cheaper than a Tahoe, so you can get a bit more for your money as long as you don’t need more than 5 seats. The JGC is also a proper off roader, the Tahoe isn’t.

A: Customer Concern: The fuel gauge is vibrating very fast. It looks like it is reading accurately. The vehicle has a single fuel tank.

Tests/Procedures: 1. Has installed a gauge tester or substitute resistors in place of the fuel tank sending unit. 40 ohms for empty, 250 ohms for full. (The sender is linear – 145 ohms for 1/2 tank.)

2. If the gauge is stable in all positions tested, replace the sender in the fuel tank.

3. If the fuel gauge on the cluster still has the rapid movement. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Blue connector. With the key on, connect a gauge tester from pin 9, Purple wire, to ground.

4. Set the tester to 45 ohms, then 90 ohms. Check for a steady needle at a 1/2 tank and then with a full tank. If the fuel gauge still vibrates, repair the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

5. If the fuel gauge is steady, verify a good connection at the PCM. If OK, replace the PCM.

A: Third on the nope it wont fit.

You would need to use one from/for an 88-98 OBS (old body style) truck. 99 model SUVs would also work (Tahoe, Suburban…)

All newer models 99+ have a different frame design so the guard will not bolt up to the frame. I’m sure you could modify the guard to fit the truck fairly easily by cutting off the mounts and welding on a type that would bolt to the truck. Use the factory frame holes on the bottom of the frame (there are 3 in a line in the center of the tube). The 2 holes that are closer to the front bumper are the holes that are used for the factory tow hooks. I installed a front receiver hitch (custom made myself) and used the factory tow hook holes as a mounting point (sandwich 1/4″ plate between tow hook and frame). I use it for my 8000lb winch and spotting trailers. So yeah, it will be strong enough!!!

Q: How much does it cost to Charge a Air Conditioner in A 1998 Chevy Tahoe?
My husband’s Tahoe is blowing hot air, when the Air Conditioner is on…he read the A/C needs to be Charged.

A: It’s a little more complicated than that.

Firstly, you need to see if the compressor clutch engages at all, you can do so by popping the hood and turning the A/C on, you should hear a click and the engine dragging down.

if it does turn on, and it turns off and on about every 10 seconds, that means you’re low on R-134a, or you have a clog somewhere in the system.

If it doesn’t cycle at all, that could mean that either it leaked out, a bad fuse, a bad wire, a bad switch, a bad clutch or the compressor is seized.

If it doesn’t engage at all, you should first start by hooking a manifold gauge set to it and see what the pressure is, then charge it accordingly. You can just buy one of those kits with R-134a and a charging hose and try adding a little, but you could risk over charging and that will give you results as bad as if you were low on it. If you live in Canada, the kits are quite hard to find.

I would recommend taking it to a mechanic and having them do some diagnostics on it. Also, I think for a quicky charge at a place like pep boys is like $70 (but don’t quote me on that) if there is no large leaks.

A: Wow Don.. way to completely make up your own facts. Wranglers are made for off-roading. Adding a 4″ lift is probably the best decision he could make! You really think it would roll if he went off a steep shoulder?! Hell with a little practice he could probably take a 2 foot shoulder drop off like a pro. Get out of here with your douchebaggery. Wranglers are incredibly safe. If you have half a brain-stem and are capable of basic bodily processes such as breathing, then you are more than qualified to safely drive a Wrangler.

Q: How to tell a your starter is the problem and is it easy to replace on a 1999 Jeep Wrangler?
I have a 1999 Jeep Wrangler and I believe the starter just went out. The engine doesn’t turn anymore and when it did, it would have a low cranking sound. ( like it didn’t want to turn on) Now it has like a burning smell when the key is turned. It that the starter? If so is it easy to replace? (a buddy says it is a just a couple of bolts) I have the truck lifted so it is easy to operate under the vehicle.

A: Yes, usually you have only 2 bolts holding on a starter. However, don’t go out and buy a starter. Disconnect your battery and then remove your starter. If you’ve removed the wires from the starter, reattach them and your battery cables. Turn the key as starting the car and watch for the heavy gear in the starter. That gear should consistently move forward and spin when you crank the engine. If so, your starter should be fine. HOWEVER, sometimes the starter gear will not advance far enough to engage the flywheel properly. When this happens you will hear grinding from the heavy starter gear grinding on your flywheel. When this happens, it will break off pieces of your flywheel. Should you stop your engine with the broken pieces of the flywheel are located and you engage the starter, there are not enough teeth left at that point of your flywheel and you will just hear grinding.

However, it takes at least 9.5 volts to start an engine. You may be getting enough juice to make the gear in your starter advance, but not enough juice to spin the flywheel. Should this be the case, remove your battery cables and clean them thoroughly, and I don’t mean with baking soda or coca cola. Just because you don’t see that “white stuff” on your battery terminals, doesn’t mean they don’t need cleaned. They are made of lead. Scrape the terminal with a knife and see how shiny it becomes. That small bit of corrosion CAN prevent it from make a good enough connection to deliver 9.5 volts to the engine, but everything else will work okay, i.e., radio, headlights, etc.

As for the burning smell, check the coverning on both your positive and negative cables.

1=unzip windows and they will come out if the railing with no problems
2=above the doors you got to pull the top out of the rails
3=release latches behind sun visor
4=push top back and rear corners will come out of rails
reinstall;
1=put top up put latch in holes but leave the latch loose
2=put the rear corners in the rail
3=now you can completely close the latches
4=put top in rails above the doors
5=zip in windows and then install them in rails

A: Junkyards, Ebay and Craigslist for a stock rim. You could get a cheap steel wheel in the correct size and go with that, probably about $100 or less. It wouldn’t effect the way the thing drove with it on, it would be a little heavier than the stock aluminum wheel, but the difference would be negligible. The opposite of a doughnut spare.

It would look ugly, but hit up a dealer that has branded covers on their Jeeps and see if you can talk them into giving you one or selling you one REALLY cheap. At my last lot we would sell them for $10 bucks if the cheap boss was in or let customers have one. Free advertising.

Next thing is invest in 3 lugs that require a ‘key’ (special socket attachment) to get off. Three of them will deter thieves, while one may not.
