Welcome!
This is the new Arroyo Seco Journal website. As you know, Northeast LA’s best local newspaper is now a glossy magazine. The publication itself is available at www.magcloud.com. (Search “News.” We’re the first ones.) From there, you can have the magazine mailed to you each month. If you don't want to wait for the mail, you can download a version at www.scribd.com. Much faster and cheaper, too!
We brought this up a couple years ago, but it bears repeating. Every year. If it’s June, it must be Lummis Day Season. Northeast LA’ s newest and favorite holiday is back. This year’s event is in a new location—the Heritage Square Museum. That’s the park at the end of Homer Street, right alongside the Pasadena Freeway, the one with “all those old houses.”
No Rock and Roll Hall of Famers this year. But plenty of talent and entertainment. Think of it as your local neighborhood all stars. We’ve got the information beginning on page 6 or therabouts.
We’ve also got a ton of art news this issue. News Editor Margaret Arnold has compiled a host of it, including gallery shows, new galleries, deceased ones, and lots of stuff in between.
Love baseball? I know you have Lakers on the brain, but we’ve got a pretty terrific travel idea for you this issue. How about 5 California baseball teams in one weekend? It’ll take a train and a lot of driving, but if you’d like the adventure, it’s inside on page 16.
Our new California History section brings us the tale of Modesta Avila, a young Santa Ana woman who dared to challenge the railroad companies in 1889. Columnist Jack Neworth has the story.
We’ve also got some cool gadgets in our Gizmotics section, the lowdown on two cool Mazdas in our Wheel Life section, and, como siempre, Dear Prudence.
June begins when you turn the page.
